Does Base Drum music notation tell you whether you hit the the base with your left or right stick?

I can read the music, but I’m not sure when I’m supposed to use my right and left hand for the notes.

First off, it’s BASS — not base.

I’m assuming your talking Marching Bass. If it’s for Concert bass, you should just use your right hand to play and adjust the dampening with your left hand/fingers on the head (unless you have really fast notes…..usually found in harder music).

If it IS for Marching Bass, read on……

Sometimes, it’s indicated with L or R written under (or above) the written note. Other times, Band Directors, Section Leaders, or Instructors will tell you what hands to play with and you write it in.

However, if there’s nothing there, use what we call “Natural Sticking”. If you are familiar with this method of counting rhythm: 1 e + a 2 e + a….etc., you play ALL numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) or “strong beats” with your R hand and all the e’s and a’s (“weak beats”) with your L hand.

Here’s an example:
1 + a 2 e + a 3 e + 4

Sticking:
R R L R L R L R L R R

For triplet stuff, it’s a little different but the idea is still the same:
Strong beats = R
Weak Beats = L

Check with the other drummers for help. It wouldn’t hurt also to get all the Bass Drummers together one day, sit down and write all the stickings in.

One of the biggest challenges for anyone attempting to notate a drumset part is that there is no absolute standard in terms of what makes up a drumset. Through this book, the Percussive Arts Society provides guidelines to aid performers, teachers, students, composers, arrangers, orchestrators and music engravers in producing clear drumset parts for a variety of uses. These guidelines cover the majority of situations and provide basic principles to help people arrive at logical solutions to unique circumstances. Topics covered include: general notation, drums, cymbals, noteheads, voicing, improvisational notation, and more.
